Unhappy Valentine's Morning
At 6:45am this morning our Angel Nanny (who has been with us for four years) arrived dressed, not as Cupid, but as the Devil (apparently The Devil does not wear Prada. She wears Hanna Andersson cable knit heart sweaters).
Angel-now-Devil Nanny is elderly and losing stamina and the fact that she has been coming from 6:45 to 8:45am in the mornings for as long as she has earns her Saint status around here. But today she declared she was done. And thus, Angel Nanny became Devil Nanny.
She explained that she was just tired of forcing W into his clothes, away from his blankie and down the street to preschool, a tough pulling teeth-like experience that is no fun for anyone (duh, why do you think I was farming out this time period three days a week? Okay yes it helps me squeeze in a swim and more work time but boy was it a relief not to pack the kids off to school!), and that in addition she had caught the boys running out the front door to the street a few times (busy street - yikes!) and was quite nervous about it. "I'm taking another job working with a newborn," she said. "At least I'll know where she is at all times." Oy.
I don't blame Devil Nanny for leaving. It wasn't a full, or even a half time job here anymore, and she just doesn't have the energy my boys demand. But hearing her say that being here was simply "not a positive experience anymore" was not what I envisioned for the first fifteen minutes of my Valentine's Day. Okay so she's a sixty-something mildly depressed Danish woman who has never minced words. It still stung. As you can see though, the day turned around when I got to hang with W in his "Peace, Love and Telluride" shirt and face painted heart at school. Nothing like a little chocolate during the school day to pick you (and twenty four-year-olds) up.
